Over the past 10 year, granite has gained in popularity. Granite is a natural stone that has been smoothed and polished. Not only are there endless color choices with granite, it is extremely durable and heat resistant. However, because granite is porous, it does require re-sealing every year.
Quartz is another popular choice. Quartz is made from about 93% natural quartz stone, with 7% resin binder and some colorant. This creates and extremely hard material. Quart is non-porous and does not need to be sealed. However, it can be burned which will cause permanent damage to the surface.
Marble counter tops can be really beautiful; however, it is very porous and can stain easily. It is also not as durable as granite and can scratch easily. Corian is another counter top option; however, it is not heat, stain or scratch resistant.
